Mystery Cross Plus

As in our Online Contests #12 and #19, the object is to fill in the grid below, one letter per square, to form a set of related items reading across and down. This time, most of the answers contain more than one word, and the spaces between words—as well as any punctuation—have been omitted.

Below the grid are 11 sets of five squares, shaped like plus signs. Each plus sign reveals the answer letters in one of the 11 blue shaded grid areas that are also shaped like plus signs. Figuring out which plus sign’s set of letters goes in which blue area of the grid is part of the challenge. We’ve also shaded five squares pink where answers intersect and listed the letters that go in those squares separately. The remaining letters that appear in the answer are listed under “White Square Across Letters” and “White Square Down Letters” according to whether they appear in answers that read across or down. Letters in the plus signs are not included in these lists.

The longest answer reading down, which contains 27 letters, is the answer to the contest.
