Coded Crisscross
The grid below, if decoded properly, contains a complete set of 12 items that make up a particular category, reading across and down in the white squares. The shaded squares contain a description of the category. We’ve replaced each letter of the alphabet with a number from 1 through 23, and a number stands for the same letter throughout the grid.
The items and the category description may be single words, phrases, or a combination of both. They may be proper names. If there are items consisting of more than one word, any spaces between the words, as well as any punctuation, have been removed. The category description from the decoded shaded squares is the solution to the contest.
The Solution
