Crypto Twist

In this encrypted quotation, spaces between words have been replaced throughout by a particular letter of the alphabet. The remaining letters each stand for another letter of the alphabet throughout, as in a normal cryptogram, or for one of three types of punctuation marks that appear in the text, which are comma, apostrophe, and colon. Line breaks are arbitrary and do not indicate ends of words. The quotation marks and period are just what they appear to be.

In the answer space, either enter the name of the person who is the author of this quotation or list the five longest words in the decoded quotation. The contest deadline is September 15, 2013. Five correct entries chosen at random will each win a one-year subscription to GAMES. Limit: One entry per e-mail address.

The Solution

The quotation decrypts as follows:

“THE WRITER, IN THE EYES OF MANY FILM PRODUCERS, STILL SEEMS TO OCCUPY A POSITION OF IMPORTANCE SOMEWHERE BETWEEN THE WARDROBE LADY AND THE TEA BOY, WITH THIS DIFFERENCE: IT'S OFTEN QUITE DIFFICULT TO REPLACE THE WARDROBE LADY.”

The author is John Mortimer, British novelist, playwright, and barrister. Either his name or a list of the five longest words in the quotation was a valid answer to the contest. In the “enhanced” cryptogram, the letter F stood for a space between words, L stood for a comma, N for colon, and X for apostrophe.
